Patchy fog and a few leftover showers are possible early Monday in Cheyenne Wells, but the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan., expects skies to improve and temperatures to climb into the upper 60s by Wednesday.

Rain and thunderstorms are likely Sunday night, with a 40 percent chance of showers lingering before 8 a.m. Monday and patchy fog before 10 a.m. Otherwise, Monday is expected to stay mostly cloudy, with a high near 59. Southeast winds of 5 to 10 mph should turn to the northwest in the afternoon.

Patchy fog may return after midnight Monday night, with a low around 40. Tuesday is forecast to be partly sunny with a high near 65, and Wednesday sunny with a high near 69.

Fog the main concern early in the week

A meteorologist at the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion about "Patchy dense fog possible the next few mornings." The office also noted a low chance of flooding from the current system. It expected the heaviest rain to fall south of the area, in southwest Kansas and the panhandles, with locally heavier amounts of about an inch possible near the Kansas-Colorado-Nebraska border.

No Red Flag Warnings or other watches, warnings or advisories are in effect for Cheyenne County, according to the Goodland office.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday morning fog should burn off by about 10 a.m., leaving partly sunny skies and a high near 65 under south winds of 5 to 15 mph. Tuesday night is expected to be partly cloudy with a low near 40.

Wednesday is forecast to be sunny and the warmest day of the week so far, with a high near 69. Wednesday night should be mostly clear with a low around 39.

Extended outlook: Thursday and Friday

Thursday should be mostly sunny with a high near 67, then partly cloudy overnight with a low near 43. A 20 percent chance of showers returns Friday, with a high near 68 and a Friday night low around 45.

The Goodland discussion said a trough diving south from the Pacific coast could bring a more active pattern from Friday afternoon through Sunday, with precipitation chances of 20 to 30 percent and uncertainty on timing. Temperatures are expected to stay pleasant, with highs in the 60s to 70s.

Motorists should use low-beam headlights and allow extra following distance if fog develops on area highways early Monday or Tuesday.
