Dense fog is likely to redevelop in Cheyenne County this evening and linger into Wednesday morning before clearing to a mild, sunny afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan.

Wednesday starts with areas of fog before 9 a.m., then becomes partly sunny and gradually sunny, with a high near 70 degrees. West winds of 5 to 10 mph turn east in the afternoon. Wednesday night brings increasing clouds with a low around 40.

Fog and visibility

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland wrote in Tuesday's Area Forecast Discussion that dense fog should clear from west to east between 9 a.m. and noon Wednesday. Locations along and north of Interstate 70 are most prone, though drivers in Cheyenne County should be prepared for reduced visibility early.

Forecasters also said easterly upslope flow Wednesday night could bring widespread low clouds and fog again toward Thursday morning. No watches, warnings or advisories were in effect for the Colorado counties in the Goodland area as of Tuesday afternoon.

Thursday and Friday

Thursday is cloudy through mid-morning, with gradual clearing and a high near 64. Forecasters said temperature confidence is low, as highs will depend on how long fog and low clouds hang on. Thursday night is mostly cloudy with a low near 43.

Friday is mostly cloudy with a 50 percent chance of showers after noon and a high near 61. A weak thunderstorm cannot be ruled out. Showers remain likely Friday night, with a low near 43.

Extended outlook

Saturday brings a slight chance of showers before noon, then partly sunny skies, with a high near 59. Sunday is mostly cloudy with a high near 60, and a 40 percent chance of showers Sunday night.

Forecasters said an active pattern could bring more widespread precipitation through early next week. Monday could be windy, with gusts to 50 mph possible across eastern Colorado, and temperatures could near freezing Monday night into Tuesday with a chance of the season's first snow. Confidence remains low this far out.

Motorists should allow extra time and use low-beam headlights during the fog.
